Essay 2.
Poem/Song Analysis Discussion
Now that you are a master of figurative language, I want you to practice analyzing the use of this type of language in what you read.
Choose any song or poem, outside of the ones read in the course, to analyze use of figurative language. All poem/song selections must be appropriate for class. They should not contain any vulgar or inappropriate language or themes. Any selections that contain such content will not be accepted for a grade. See if you can identify some of the figurative language used on your own. Think also about how this language affects the reader and why the author might have chosen to use it, as well as the main idea the author is trying to communicate through the use of this language.
First, submit a post about your chosen song or poem to this discussion by clicking the New Thread button in the upper-left corner. Title your thread with the title of your song or poem. Include the words of the song or poem, or at least the part containing the figurative language you are discussing, in your post. Then, write at least 300 words discussing the theme or main idea of the song or poem, the types of figurative language used, and how these devices contribute to the authors purpose.
Second, respond to at least two other students analyses, with at least 100 words each, by replying to their threads. Note language they may have missed or instances where you saw its impact in a different way.
Please note that this is not a critique; this is a response. Basically, the Thumper Rule applies here: If you cant say something nice, dont say nothin at all. Unkind, inappropriate, hurtful, and shaming posts and language will absolutely not be tolerated. Remember that other students will be responding to your posts, and I am sure you hope they will be kind to you as well.
